Male Green Woodpecker

 
 

This detailed study shows the highly coloured male on a rotting oak stump. Affectionately known as the "laughing woodpecker", due to its raucous song which announces its arrival. The bird is also known in the West of England as the 'Yaffle', It is a frequent visitor to garden lawns and orchards, where it drills for insects.
